Why did the builders leave these squares on the desert floor? If they really are the remnants of levelling work why was the job not completed? Part of the huge cliffs of rock left by the levelling an be seen in the distance and an idea of how much rock was removed can be seen. It is inconceivable to me that this small area would have been left unfinished considering how much work was carried out in this area.

However, if the squares serve another purpose altogether that would answer this puzzle.
